endangered salmons, sea lion cages and value conflicts

These open cages were part of a controversial trapping program for stopping sea lions from eating endangered salmon at the dam between Washington and Oregon. Unfortunate the cages didn't work, not only for the salmons but also for the sea lions--they kept on coming back and six of them were shot to death Monday.

It is still not clear who was the murder. But do the sea lions deserve being shot/caged/relocated? Would the story be any different if 1) the salmon were not endangered, and 2) the salmon were not one of the favorites for commercial fishermen?
