What's wrong with this Wired picture

Alex Steffen had an excellent counterpoint to the Wired piece: as I discussed before system errors deserve holistic treatment. The preponderance of global warming doesn't mean we have to forget everything else, e.g. endangered spotted owl.

But I disagree with "citizens need clarity not controversies". Yes a debate like this might confuse people at first. But in the long run we need to involve them into the discussion not to shield them with an controversy-free greenhouse: environmental issues are complex and involve value conflicts and we need to communicate this complexity and conflict. After all it is the citizens who make environmental decisions not a selected few, whether it is government officials, big cooperations, scientists or environmentalists.
