A whale story from Vermont: I always wondered why there is a whale sculpture along highway I-89 close to Burlington (here is a picture). It turns out once upon a time whales were in VT!
Update: There happened to be a blog on Freakonomics on whaling by Nathan Myhrvold . Here are a couple quotes:
