Exploring the roles of conflicting social values & scientific uncertainty in environmental decision-making
wow... thats some crazy analogy!!! So perhaps efforts to stop invasive species entering Australia its the ecological equivalent to stopping the boats?! One thing the NYT fails to acknowledge is that humans are all the same species, whereas the devastation of invasives comes from alien species entering a new system where they ultimately eliminate existing ecosystems. So more like aliens landing on earth and wiping out the human race, that would be a better analogy (and, indeed, why we often call invasives 'aliens'). It is to be expected that organisms of the same species could live happily together - perhaps society can learn something from ecology there!
