140 liters water = 1 cup of coffee

If I understand correctly, this means it requires 140 liters of water to produce the coffee used for 1 cup/125ml?! That sounds like a lot. For a glass of wine with the same volume, the required virtual water content is 120 liters, according to the data in this paper.

The paper carried on in measuring the average water footprints for different countries in the world for the period 1997-2001. USA: 2480 m3/cap/yr, Australia 1393 m3/cap/yr, and China 700 m3/cap/yr.

I like the approach because it shifts our minds from dollars to litters. As fresh water becomes more and more scarce, we should think seriously about our water footprint.

I am quitting my coffee. Will drink wine instead ;)
