All we have to do is...

I am reading literature in risk analysis, and this is Fischhoff on risk communication.

"Communication is like an insurance policy. It is a fixed cost that can prevent larger damage."

In the same paper he also talked about developmental stages of a scientist/risk analyst in risk management.

All we have to do is...

…get the numbers right.

…tell them the numbers.

…explain what we mean by the numbers.

…show them that they’ve accepted similar risks in the past.

…show them that it’s a good deal for them.

…treat them nice.

…make them partners.

…all of the above

This is the best way to summarize scientists' role in a decision making process that I have seen so far and it does not only applies to risk analysis for sure.
